When You Get Frustrated

There will be times when you're studying an instrument when you get very frustrated with your progress. This doesn't have to do with you; learning music is a very difficult process. In fact, if it were easy, everyone would play an instrument. There are some very fun ways that you can make sure you understand how far you've come, however, which is a huge part of making sure that you have the morale to keep going where you're headed!

Recordings of Your Lessons

A few years down the line, when you're struggling with a complex part, it's a good idea to go back and listen to how you sounded when you started. This is an excellent way to make sure that you can use the victories of the past to inspire you to take on the challenges waiting for you in the future.

Maybe, when you just cannot get the right tone out of a long reach on your guitar fretboard, it's because you're forgetting some elementary aspect of hand position that would end the frustration in a second. Take notes. When you're reviewing lessons from the past, make sure you take notes, as well. The first time you take a lesson, you'll tend to write down all the new material you're expected to learn and may leave out elements that are very important, but that you don't realize are important at the time. Using the aforementioned example, if you remember your guitar teacher telling you to keep your thumb behind the fretboard when you're learning your first A minor chord, it just seems like part of playing the chord. When you're trying to reach across 5 frets in a classical piece some time down the line, that thumb behind the fretboard technique will be even more important, even though you may have forgotten it and developed bad habits in the interim.

Make sure you study where you've been so that you know how to get where you're headed. If you end up becoming a very adept player or even having a career as a musician, listening to those old lessons can be a lot of fun. For other people who may end up looking up to you because of your abilities, they can be great ways to remind them that everyone starts from square one and even the prodigies in the world didn't start out knowing how to play their instruments!
